David "Boogie" Gonzalez

Linda Zabors

David Gonzales, aka. Boogie, left his life in a street gang and became a peace activist after the violent death of his brother. He was an active member of the Chicago Chicano Movement in the 1970s and negotiated truces between gangs. In 1973 he became the victim of a drive by shooting between rival gangs.

There is a mural in the Pilsen neighborhood dedicated in his honor on the corner of 18th Street and Throop Street. It was restored in 2021 by artist Salvador Vega.
